Day 272 – Geneva, Switzerland

Posted in Switzerland on October 6, 2011 by jpomio

We continued to explore Geneva this afternoon. Yesterday we toured Geneva’s Old Town while today we discovered “International Geneva”, a city which is home to many important international organizations. We began our walking tour by visiting the former headquarters of the UN, Palais des Nations. We then proceeded to pass by various other organizations which call Geneva their home (World Trade Organization, UNICEF, etc.). After completing our sightseeing, we headed back to our hotel early to catch Ryan’s mom and brother Matt on SKYPE. Congratulations Matt on your upcoming wedding this Saturday!!!

Day 271 – Geneva, Switzerland

Posted in Switzerland on October 5, 2011 by jpomio

This morning we said goodbye to hilly Lausanne and hopped on a train heading to Geneva, our last destination in Switzerland. Although we had quite an adventure getting to our hotel (which is technically located in France on the outskirts of Geneva), with the help of a kind stranger we finally made it there. After quickly checking in and dropping off our bags, we hopped on a local bus which took us to Geneva’s city center where we took the tourist office recommended walking tour of the city. St. Peter’s Cathedral was especially interesting due to its multifaceted external architecture.

Day 270 – Lausanne, Switzerland

Posted in Switzerland on October 4, 2011 by jpomio

This morning we departed Bern and got on a train to Lausanne. Our one hour and fifteen minute train ride was especially scenic as we approached Lausanne, a hilly city situated on Lake Geneva. After dropping off our bags, we promptly began our sightseeing efforts. Today’s exploration was physically demanding as we walked up and down hills to admire the various parts of this Swiss city. Later in the afternoon we hopped on the metro and went to Ouchy (the port area of Lausanne) where we enjoyed gorgeous views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. Since Lausanne is the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, we made sure to visit Olympic Park.

Day 269 – Bern, Switzerland

Posted in Switzerland on October 3, 2011 by jpomio

What an eventful start to our day this morning. Awaking to the sounds of loud drills at 7am (thank you hotel IBIS in Kriens), the morning continued to progress in a similar offbeat fashion. After overpaying for a faster train to Bern, we found out that our train was cancelled due to technical problems with the track (so we had to wait at the station for an hour and then hop on the slower train). Although we arrived in Bern an hour and a half behind schedule, we were happy to learn that the city is small enough to explore in a few hours. Since we only had a day in Bern, we quickly dropped off our bags and began our walking tour of this very nice Swiss city.

Day 268 – Kriens, Switzerland (Pilatus)

Posted in Switzerland on October 2, 2011 by jpomio

We had the most incredible time this afternoon. After paying an exorbitant amount of money for a cable car ride up to the top of Pilatus, we spent the day on the peak of this gorgeous mountain. The views of the Alps from Pilatus were magnificent. We had an amazing time hiking various trails to different lookout points (where we admired the spectacular scenery and the local wildlife). Today was the first day we finally felt like we were in Switzerland.

Day 267 – Lucerne, Switzerland

Ryan and I cannot believe it is October already! Time sure does fly when you are having fun traveling. This morning we departed Zurich and migrated to our next Swiss destination, Lucerne. Our one hour train ride was brief and pleasant. After checking into our hotel located on the edge of the Alps, we headed for the city center where we proceeded to take the guidebook recommended walking tour. Lucerne is absolutely lovely and its location is stunning. The Alps provide a beautiful backdrop to a very charming city.

Day 266 – Zurich, Switzerland

Posted in Switzerland on September 30, 2011 by jpomio

We continued to explore Zurich this afternoon. Although we have seen most of Zurich’s city center during our walking tour yesterday, we decided to revisit the old part of town to enjoy its narrow streets and to see what else we could discover. One such discovery was a beautiful secluded garden next to what sounded like a music school. After lounging around on a park bench enjoying some sunshine in the garden, we hiked uphill to see the campus of the University of Zurich. A couple of the school’s cafeterias had wonderful views of Zurich. We headed back to the hotel earlier than usual so that I could SKYPE with my childhood best friend who is getting married today.  Congratulations Margie on your big day!
