Day 322 – In transit to Spain

Posted in Portugal on November 25, 2011 by jpomio

This morning we SADLY said goodbye to Lisbon and to our incredibly gracious host Alvaro. We then hopped on a bus heading to Faro. Three hours later, we arrived in Faro where we had a couple of hours to grab lunch and to explore the old city prior to the next leg of our trip (a long bus ride to Seville). Our first coach bus had WIFI onboard so we were able to entertain ourselves during a part of our long journey. Although we spent most of the day in transit, it was wonderful to see charming Faro. Upon our evening arrival in Seville, we went out for a very late tapas dinner and a midnight flamenco performance which was incredible.

Day 321 – Lisbon, Portugal

Posted in Portugal on November 24, 2011 by jpomio

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We spent our last full day in Portugal relaxing and being thankful for the many blessings in our lives. Since the country was participating in a general strike all day, none of the public transportation was operating. Taking full advantage of our “free day”, we slept in, finally went to the barber to get Ryan’s haircut, and went out to the movies. In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious Portuguese dinner with our friend Alvaro and his girlfriend. We are so very thankful for such wonderful friends.

Day 320 – Sintra, Portugal

We took a day trip to Sintra today. Our 40 minute train ride from Lisbon to Sintra was pleasantly comfortable. Blessed with pure sunshine and warmer weather, we explored Sintra’s natural landscape and beautiful palaces. Ryan and I were especially impressed by the incredible aerial views from the Moorish Castle and the enchanting beauty of Pena National Palace. After a day of extensive walking, we are completely beat (Ryan even fell asleep on me during our train ride back to Lisbon this evening).

Day 319 – Lisbon, Portugal

Posted in Portugal on November 22, 2011 by jpomio

Today we explored the more modern part of Lisbon, located on the eastern side of the city. Since the weather was cold and rainy, we spent most of our day inside Lisbon’s incredible Oceanarium (the second largest in the world). The Oceanarium is extremely well curated and it showcases some fantastic marine life. I especially loved watching the giant Pacific octopus, what a stunning creature!

Day 318 – Lisbon, Portugal

Posted in Portugal on November 21, 2011 by jpomio

We continued to explore beautiful Lisbon this afternoon. First we visited the Belem area, which is home to the exquisite Mosterio dos Jeronimos. Unfortunately we did not get a chance to go inside this impressive structure as it is closed on Mondays. Next we walked over to the river front to admire the Torre de Belem and Padrao dos Descobrimentos. After enjoying some delicious Pasteis de Belem, we headed back to the city center. Lisbon is filled with so much beautiful architecture. Buildings such as the Rossio train station truly leave an impression on a tourist. In the evening we went out for a yummy Portuguese dinner with our friend Alvaro and his friend Xavier. It is a real treat to be in a lovely foreign city in such good company.

Day 317 – Obidos, Portugal

Posted in Portugal on November 20, 2011 by jpomio

Today Ryan and I took a day trip to Obidos, an enchanting Portuguese town just an hour north of Lisbon. Obidos is simply AMAZING with its narrows streets and colorfully outlined white houses. We had an incredible time exploring this romantic little city. We roamed Obidos’ adorable streets, walked on the city walls, and enjoyed a delicious Portuguese lunch at a local restaurant. I absolutely fell in love with Obidos!

Day 316 – Lisbon, Portugal

Posted in Portugal on November 19, 2011 by jpomio

We had an incredible time exploring Lisbon today. This charming Portuguese city is one of Europe’s hidden gems and we absolutely love it. After spending over six hours on our feet this afternoon, we walked through many beautiful parts of Lisbon. I especially loved the amazing aerial views of the city from Castelo de Sao Jorge. In the evening, our friend Alvaro cooked up a storm and pampered us with a delicious Portuguese dinner (a fish and potato stew which was so yummy). We had a great time conversing into the AM hours.
